Firefighters rushed to battle a large blaze when a MyCiti bus went up in flames on Nelson Mandela Boulevard on Thursday evening.

The bus fire created a great commotion disturbing the flow of traffic on the incoming lane headed into the Cape Town CBD.

The City’s emergency services responded promptly and the blaze was extinguished with two fire engines on the scene.

“Two fire engines, a rescue vehicle and 12 staff members were dispatched. Currently, the fire fighters are on scene utilizing two fog jets to contain this fire,” said the COCT Fire and Rescue services spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse.

The N2 incoming wass closed at Hospital Bend and traffic was diverted onto M3 outgoing. The M3 incoming was closed and traffic has been diverted onto Woolsack Drive but all road closures relating to this incident should now be cleared.

The bus was not carrying passengers when it caught fire and the driver was able to flee the vehicle before the blaze engulfed the bus. The fire is believed to have started in the bus’ engine compartment before quickly spreading. There is no suggestion that this is in anyway linked to the burning of a Golden Arrow Bus in Cape Town on Thursday.

The fire is not expected to have any impact on MyCiti routes and the bus schedule going forward. MyCiti have yet to issue any formal explanation of the fire as of Thursday night 22:00 SAST.
