Cape Town Disaster Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell told News24 on Wednesday that there was no severe flooding reported overnight.

However, she said the city should brace itself as a second cold front is set to envelop the Western Cape later on Wednesday.

Areas particularly vulnerable are in the city’s outskirts and informal settlements.

The city said it is on high alert and prepared to handle any cases of severe flooding.

The SA Weather service also warned that snowfall is expected in the high-lying areas of the Western Cape and the southern parts of the Northern Cape.

City warning

On Tuesday, the city urged residents in low-lying areas to put measures in place to reduce the risk of flooding.

“With flooding expected in many regions of the Western Cape, including in the Cape metropole, the city’s human settlements directorate urges residents who reside in low-lying, flood-prone areas to help to reduce the flooding risk by, amongst others, raising the floor level of their homes so that it is higher than the natural ground level,” the city’s statement read.

“In instances where localised flooding occurs, communities in informal settlements can contact the city’s call centre on 0860 103 089 to request sand to raise the floor levels of their dwellings to keep water out.

“If the roof of a structure is leaking, residents can apply for flood kits from the city’s informal settlements management team.”
