A fire has caused extensive damage to parliament’s Old Assembly Building in the Mother City.

The blaze, that has since been contained, affected upper floor areas including offices and committee meeting rooms. The rest of the parliament building was not affected.

A large part of the building including certain parts of the lower floor not affected by fire, have been left flooded due to the activation of the fire sprinkler system.

In a statement, parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says the cause of the fire is being investigated.
