Police investigate murder of a Mitchells Plain High school security guard

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said it will be boosting security at Woodlands Secondary School in Mitchells Plain, after a security guard was found stabbed to death on the premises over the weekend.

Police spokesperson Sargent Noloyiso Rwexana said that police are investigating a case of murder, after  the guard was  found early on Sunday morning.

“According to reports, a body of a 35-year-old man was found with stab wounds to his chest in the security office at the school. Police detectives are following up on possible leads in pursuit of those responsible for this crime.”

Education MEC spokesperson Jessica Shelver said the security guard last corresponded with his control room just after 5am.

Police Spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said police are now searching for suspects.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation and our police detectives are following up on all possible leads in pursuit for those responsible for this crime,” said Van Wyk.

Provincial education department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond expressed concern that the incident occurred on the school premises.

“The guard was contracted by the school governing body (SGB). While we are unsure of what transpired, it is extremely concerning that this happened on school premises.”

Education MEC spokesperson Jessica Shelver noted that security cameras were also stolen.

It follows a random search whereby several items such as dagga, weapons, cigarettes and lighters, drug paraphernalia and a pair of handcuffs were confiscated.

Meanwhile, in a different incident, a 31-year-old guard was allegedly stabbed to death by a gangsters in Manenberg on Saturday night.

Rwexana explained that the man, believed to be a Global Force Security guard, was walking home with five of his colleagues at the end of their shift at the Athlone Stadium.

Rxewana added that six alleged gangsters attacked him while they were walking their dogs along Klipfontein Road towards Gugulethu.

“According to reports, they grabbed hold of the victim while threatening his colleagues with violence as they robbed him of his cellphone and money,” said Rxewana.

The guard was then stabbed just before Duinefontein Road.

‘‘One of the perpetrators stabbed the security guard once in the chest, he collapsed and succumbed to his injuries on the scene. The suspects fled down Towerkop Road in Heideveld.”

Manenberg police said they hope to make arrests soon as the suspects are known perpetrators.
