Some light rain had begun falling in Simon’s Town, Cape Town, on Thursday night where firefighters have been battling a fire on the mountain.

The rainfall began at around 21:00.

Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Theo Layne, said the fire was less aggressive because the winds had died down. It was not threatening to damage any more property.

The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre spokesperson, Charlotte Powell had earlier said that the fire had reached 13 structures, destroying some and damaging others.

Powell said residents living in Runciman Heights and Harbour Heights were part of the evacuation while the SPCA had also moved some animals to a holding area.

Municipal halls in Simon’s Town and Fish Hoek, as well as the Simon’s Town Country Club hall, had been set up to house were being used as emergency shelters.

The City’s Safety and Security Director Richard Bosman, however, said the shelters were empty as those who have had their houses damaged in the fire had since made arrangements with friends and family.

Bosman said at one stage there were about 100 people at the community hall in Simon’s Town.

The fire began on Wednesday afternoon rapidly spread as it was fanned by strong winds and high temperatures. News24
