A gang of men robbed worshippers at a central Johannesburg mosque this week, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

“The case was only opened yesterday [Saturday] but the incident happened on Thursday,” Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

“Six unknown people attacked those people while they were praying and robbed them of cellphones, cash, and the mosque safe.”

No injuries were reported and no shots fired. Dlamini said there was no indication that the group was armed.

“No arrests have been made yet.”

It was unclear why the case was opened only on Saturday.

The mosque is at the corner of President and Von Brandis streets. SAPA
