South African businesses who are exhibiting their products at the 12th annual Malaysian International Halal Showcase, were educated about the halal landscape in Malaysia, at a seminar hosted by the South African High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.

The 13 companies – manufacturers of biscuits, olive oil, spices and chocolates, etc –received financial and logistical support from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to market their goods at the trade show, which forms part of the inaugural World Halal Summit.

According to newly appointed High Commissioner, Samkelisiwe Mhlanga the South East Asian market was a key area for South Africa as it would many opportunities.

“The provision of halal food has the potential of being “very big” business as we have a sizeable Muslim population in South Africa. When we found out that it can become a profitable enterprise for all South Africans we stepped in to assist.”

“With the assistance of DTI, we provided the South African exhibitors with the administrative support to export their product to Malaysia and other countries in the region,” she explained.

Mhlanga added that after speaking to several exhibitors and Malaysian stakeholders, there have been several discussions to bring the idea of ‘halal parks’ to South Africa.

Meanwhile DTI’s Kenneth Malatsi, government often chooses to get involved in trade shows to showcase South African products and to give businesses an opportunity to explore international markets.

“For South Africa, halal is in a new market…we get involved in these trade shows to expose manufacturers and producer with opportunities that come with the halal market.”

“It is not only about halal consumption but also about ethical business practice and ensuring that the product is manufactured and transported under the strictest of hygienic conditions,” he said. VOC (Shanaaz Ebrahim)
