The preliminary round of the 12th annual South African National Quran Competition is set to take place on the 1st and 2nd April. As the brain child of Shaykh Ebrahim Gabriels and his then deputy, Moulana Ihsaan Hendricks, the competition attracts “top class” reciters from around the country.
Administrator of the Muslim Judicial Council Department of Qur’anic Affairs and regional co-ordinator of the South African Qur’an Committee, Shaykh Zaid Dante, explained that all proceedings are going as planned, as all relevant haafith schools and institutions in the Western Cape have been informed of the event.
Dante explained that as the competition grew in popularity, the Department assisted in sending numerous students to participate in international competitions, many of whom have made top 10 lists.
“Each year, the event is a different experience as we notice the development of students,” Dante stated.
The competition includes three categories, namely; the full Qur’an category, the fifteen ajzaa category, and the five ajzaa category and runs concurrently with the Johannesburg based competition, under the auspices of the South African National Qur’an Committee.
Students who excel in the preliminary rounds will represent the Western Cape at international events.
The competition includes a female category, winners of which will compete in the Johannesburg competition.
“Any member of the public who has memorised the Qur’an is welcomed to participate in the preliminaries since this competition provides a ‘gateway’ for students to enter international competitions.”
