A State Security Agency employee implicated in the theft of R17m from the agency appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The case against William Mmotong was postponed to January 19, said Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

Mmotong, a driver at the SSA, was one of three men arrested in connection with the crime.

Another man, Khayalethu Mgatyelwa, a security officer at the SSA, appeared in court last week. His case was postponed to January 19.

“The other one was released. He could not be linked to the matter,” said Mulaudzi.

Both men remained behind bars as the investigation continued.

The millions, all in foreign currency including dollars and euros, was stolen between Christmas and Boxing Day from a safe at the agency’s Pretoria headquarters.

The Hawks said one of the suspects was captured on CCTV footage.

Mulaudzi would not say whether any of the money had been recovered following the arrests. News24
