Set date for questioning, Malema pleads

EFF leader Julius Malema on Wednesday pleaded in the National Assembly with Speaker Baleka Mbete to agree that a programming committee set a date for the outstanding questions to be answered.

“I am pleading with you… please commit that tomorrow’s [Thursday’s] programme [meeting] will come up with a date of when will the president answer the outstanding questions.”

Malema warned that if this was not done, his party would ask the outstanding questions during Wednesday’s session.

“We are asking, come up with a date for the outstanding questions,” he said.

The outstanding questions referred to are those from last year’s August 21 question session, which was halted by EFF members chanting “pay back the money” to the president.

They wanted to know when Zuma would pay back the money spent on his Nkandla residence.

By 4pm on Wednesday, President Jacob Zuma’s replies to questions in the House had been delayed by an hour. A large contingent of white-shirted police had gathered outside the National Assembly.

Earlier, Mbete told MPs she had received a letter from the EFF, requesting that the proceedings of August 21 be completed.

“The letter is receiving consideration,” she said. SAPA
