Suspended Gauteng Hawks boss Shadrack Sibiya was injured when his car overturned and rolled, his lawyer Victor Nkwashu said on Friday.

“I was with him in the vehicle… it overturned and rolled. I am fine and working as we speak,” Nkwashu said.

Unnamed sources told The Star the car was shot at.

Nkwashu would not say where the accident happened on Monday, or the extent of Sibiya’s injuries.

Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the organisation was told about the accident.

“We were informed about it and are awaiting a report regarding that,” he said.

Sibiya is fighting his suspension in court. He and suspended national Hawks head Anwa Dramat are accused of orchestrating the rendition of five Zimbabwean men in 2010.

The five, including Witness Ndeya, Gordon Dube and Pritchard Tshuma, were illegally repatriated to Zimbabwe by the Hawks. Proper extradition processes were not followed and Ndeya and Dube were killed, allegedly by Zimbabwean police.

In a draft report, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate found Dramat and Sibiya were directly involved in the renditions. According to a final report, compiled in March 2014, they were cleared on the basis of additional evidence. SAPA
