Major-General Shadrack Sibiya claims he was fired as the Gauteng Hawks commissioner not because of illegal renditions but because he arrested Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli.

Sibiya’s advocate, Paul Kennedy, yesterday told the Safety and Security Sectoral Bargaining Council in Pretoria: “This was political. There are sinister motives behind this. It is about Sibiya’s arrest of Mdluli.”

Kennedy said Sibiya was a “scapegoat”.

Sibiya arrested Mdluli in connection with the 1999 murder of Oupa Ramogibe, the husband of a former girlfriend of Mdluli.

Kennedy said no evidence had been produced to show that Sibiya authorised the arrests of the Zimbabweans .

“Despite witnesses testifying that Sibiya was never involved, he was found guilty.”
