SPCA investigating ‘miraculous’ appearance of dead baboon in Gugulethu home

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is investigating how a dead baboon was found in the cupboard of a Gugulethu home.

A video of the baboon’s “miraculous” appearance was caught on film and posted on social media last Thursday. A pastor “sensed” a Tokoloshe (an evil spirit) was inside a woman’s home and found a dead baboon in her cupboard.

The carcass was removed and stabbed on the pavement before it was paraded at a church gathering.

When the SPCA visited the woman’s home on Monday, she maintained the animal’s appearance was a “gift from God,” Cape of Good Hope SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abraham told News24.

“We are not a religious or a cultural organisation, so we do not want to offend anybody, but we do not believe the baboon appeared from nowhere.

“We are of the opinion that somebody caused harm to the baboon, killed him, and placed him in the cupboard.”

It was highly unlikely that the baboon wandered into the home of its own accord. There were no baboon troops near Gugulethu, she said.

When News24 phoned the church for comment, the pastor was unavailable for comment.

Abrahams said this was the first time the SPCA has dealt with an incident of this type.

Members of the public with information about the matter could call the SPCA on 021-700-4158/9.

“The investigation is far from over. We cannot allow animals to be abused for whatever reason.”
