Final examinations would continue at Stellenbosch University on Wednesday despite disruptions by protesting workers and students, the institution’s Rector Management Team (RMT) said on Tuesday.

The RMT said the university had taken extra precautions to strength security and control access to exam venues.

“Following today’s [Tuesday’s] incidents further measures and security personnel have been put in place to make sure exams continue as planned. This afternoon protesters tried to disrupt an exam in an academic building but due to the security measures the exam could continue without any incident,” the RMT said.

Protesters were alleged to have torched tyres, dustbins and two vehicles at a parking lot. The group was dispersed by the police.

The RMT has condemned the violence and has called on protesters to respect the right of other students who wished to complete their academic year.

“The university acknowledges the right of staff and students to protest, provided that protest action does not disrupt academic and administrative activities, does not create risks to the safety of people and does not cause damage to university property, or infringe on the rights of students to learn,” said the RMT.

“It has also been the institution’s approach to avoid actions that could accelerate violence. However, the university will not tolerate hooliganism or thuggery, and will act against individuals who have vandalised property, and tried to disrupt the exam.”

The RMT said it was committed to finding sustainable solutions to the students and workers issues.

Among the protesters list of demands was an end to outsourcing. News24
