Tafelsig residents seething after murder

The Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum (CPF) says the Tafelsig community is angered by the horrific murder of an elderly resident and fears the incident will lead to mob justice.

61 year old Gafsa Roberts was allegedly killed by her son after she was beaten to death with a hammer. A close friend living nearby found her body in a rubbish bin.

Residents staged a protest on Wednesday after her 21 year old son was released on bail. The community was outraged that the suspect has been released on bail provisionally.

Members of the community resorted to violence by throwing stones and burning tyres when the suspect was released. Mitchell’s Plain CPF chairman Abie Isaacs said although the community is angered by the court’s decision, the law still has to be respected.

“We condemn these violent acts in the strongest terms, the community cannot take the law into their own hands,” he said.

Police used teargas to disperse the crowd who after three hours stopped their protest. This week, neighbours in Winterhoek street told VOC News that Roberts was victimised by her son on a daily basis and lived in fear of him. He is allegedly a drug addict, although his sister denied this claim. She said her brother was suffering from  a mental condition and was a patient at a local psychiatric hospital.
