Tensions are high in Rocklands, Mitchells Plain, after an alleged high ranking gangster was shot and killed on Thursday afternoon.

Locals say they fear retaliation shootings after the 47-year-old was killed in a hail of bullets near a shopping centre in Caravelle Street at 17:00.

The man allegedly belonged to the Hard Livings gang.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed the victim sustained multiple bullet wounds.

“The deceased was declared dead on the scene by paramedics,” he said.

“At this stage the motive for the murder is unknown and the possibility that it might be gang related will be investigated.”

Sedricks Daniels, chairperson of the Rocklands Neighbourhood Watch, said his members were out in their numbers as the area was “very tense”.

“The man who was shot is a Hard Livings gang leader, so we unfortunately expect retaliation from the Americans,” he told News24.

“With the weekend ahead, there are fears that this turf war could escalate over the coming days. But we are keeping an eye on our streets.

“We don’t want to see innocent people get hurt. Their safety is our only worry.”

Mitchells Plain Community Police Forum chairperson Abie Isaacs confirmed a number of sporadic shootings had taken place in Rocklands over the past month, but said his team and the community had expressed a “level of satisfaction” with police’s response to the gunfire. News24
