The ANC is anti-black – Qwabe

Rhodes scholar and student activist Ntokozo Qwabe has accused the ANC of being anti-black.

Addressing reporters following what he called “tip gate”, Qwabe said “‘this is not a government that is pro black”.

“The ANC doesn’t get it and we have reconciled ourselves with that.”

Qwabe, who was one of the leaders of the Rhodes Must Fall movement, said people in the student movement were becoming disillusioned with the ruling party.

“We are being forced to look for alternatives.”

“We have every reason to be suspicious of the ANC and the abuse of state power…” he said, referring to the Marikana shooting and the recent Rhodes University protest.

Tip incident ‘not spitefulness’

Qwabe made headlines last month following an incident at Obz Café in Cape Town when he and another activist refused to tip a white waitress.

He sought to clear up reports regarding the incident saying it was not him who wrote ‘WE WILL GIVE [A] TIP WHEN YOU RETURN THE LAND’ on the till slip, however he backed what was written.

“You must distinguish between the story as it happened, and the story as it is told by the media,” he said.

Qwabe said it was transgender activist Wandile Dlamini who wrote on the slip, but says it was not out of spite.

“It was not a moment of spitefulness, or dickness… the act was not about the waitress.”

Qwabe on Monday also took exception to comments made by ANC Western Cape spokesperson Yonela Diko, who reportedly described the incident as “borderline criminal behaviour” and questioned why the ANC had not distanced itself from the comment.

“We have not seen the party attempting to distance itself from anything that spokesperson said.

“We understand now and it is clear that this will be our relationship with the ANC going forward.”
