Western Cape Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer and five others appeared in the Goodwood Magistrates Court on Friday on charges of corruption. The six face 109 counts, including corruption, fraud, money laundering and defeating the ends of justice.

Included in the six were Lamoer, three senior cops, businessman Mohamed Salim Dawjee and his son Zameer, EWN tweeted. Bail was set at R5 000 for Lamoer and his co-accused.

Members of the Western Cape police made brief appearances in the public gallery, including Major General Jeremy Vearey, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, and alleged whistleblower, Goodwood Commander Hansia Hansraj.

Journalists waited patiently outside the Goodwood police station, which is next to the Goodwood courthouse, to catch a glimpse of the accused before their court appearance.

The National Prosecuting Authoritys Billy Downer is set to prosecute.

According to reports, the four officers had been investigated since September 2014 on allegations of corruption.

In October 2013, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate said it would investigate allegations that National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega had tipped off Lamoer about an investigation against him by crime intelligence, News24 reported at the time.

Phiyega reportedly told Lamoer on three occasions that she was aware he was under investigation.

At the time it was reported that their telephone conversations had been legally recorded by crime intelligence operatives monitoring Lamoers calls.

Phiyega denied tipping off Lamoer. Last year, the National Prosecuting Authority announced that it would not pursue complaints against Phiyega of defeating the end of justice. News24
