Trio nabbed for beach robberies released

Law Enforcement officers are monitoring the stretch of the False Bay coastline between Sunrise and Sonwabi beaches after three teens arrested for a spate of robberies in this vicinity were released from police custody last week.

This after none of the victims were prepared to lay charges.

The trio was apprehended on Tuesday at 15:30 when a Law Enforcement officer patrolling the sand dunes in the area found the teenagers – two aged 16 and one 15 – hiding out, mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said in a statement.

The group fled when they spotted the officer, but all three were nabbed when a colleague assisted in the chase.

“At the Muizenberg Police Station, it was established that the trio was wanted in connection with robberies on the beach,” Smith said.

All three reside in Capricorn.

“The issue of robberies along the beach was recently raised in the media and our staff were therefore pleased with the breakthrough, only to be informed the following day that none of the complainants were prepared to lay charges.

“As a result, the suspects remain free and will more than likely continue committing crimes until someone is prepared to stand up, lay charges, and let them face the consequences of their actions through the criminal justice system.”

Successful prosecutions hinge on evidence and victims of crime are crucial links in the prosecutorial chain. An arrest is only the starting point in the process, Smith pointed out.

“Assist us by laying charges and appearing in court when called upon to testify. Without [the public’s] co-operation, the good work of our officers as well as the South African Police Service will come to nought and more people will fall victim to crimes like these.” News24
