Two women were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a block of flats in Boston Street, Bellville.

About 120 people had to be evacuated from the 10-storey building, Cape Town fire and rescue spokesperson Theo Layne said. “The fire has been extinguished, and firefighters have inspected all the floors to make sure everything is safe.”

The offices of the Department of Home Affairs, housed on the ground floor of the building, would also remain closed for the rest of the day to allow for mop up operations, Layne said. The fire did not spread to the offices.

The fire started just after 12:00 on one of the residential floors, but the cause was yet to be determined. “There is not much damage to the building, most of the damage is to people’s personal effects.” News24
