If you think that you have what it takes to participate in a cook-off, then we have just the event for you. Vangate Mall, in conjunction with the Voice of the Cape Radio, is inviting all aspiring chefs, as well as professional chefs to showcase their cooking or baking skills.  Situated on Jakes Gerwel Drive, Athlone, the centre provides shoppers with 123 shops to choose from where it caters to everyone’s needs and has become part of the culture of the Cape Flats community.

Speaking to VOC, Vangate Mall marketing manager, Gouwah Waja explains that Vangate mall has begun the Vangate Mall festival of Flavours campaign that will be promoting the wide variety of food options within the mall.

She says that the highlight of the campaign is a cooking competition, in which anyone is welcome to showcase their signature dish.

“All you need to do is prepare your signature dish – at home – and present it to our judges on September 24, 2016, National Braai Day, between 11am and 3pm.”

The judges will select the five best dishes on the day that will subsequently go through to the final cook-off, which will take place on October 29, 2016.

The judges will include; the editor of Peoples Post Cecilia Hume and VOC’s Malika Noordien.

While competitors have free reign to choose the kind of dish they intend to prepare, they will be judged according to presentation, taste and creativity.

“You can prepare any kind of dish, whether it is a main meal or a savoury snack and it can be traditionally African, Indian, Chinese, and even English.”

In addition to hosting the cooking competition, the mall will be hosting two more competitions.

Shoppers can stand a chance to win a prize by simply handing in a till slip of a minimum of R200 from any store in the mall or by answering questions posted on the Vangate Mall Facebook page.

Centre Manager, Tamara Ngcizda explains that there are fabulous prizes up for grabs, which include; Pick n Pay vouches, a virgin active premium gym membership, which is valued at R14 000, a king size bed, a three-piece lounge suite, a Defy fridge, Vodacom tablets, and AMC Classic posts.

Ngcizda says that as the cook-off gets underway, shoppers will be entertained by a braai-off, which will be taking place at the centre.

VOC and the Peoples Post will in show of national pride take-up the challenge and compete against each other in the braai-off.

“This will include a trolley-dash through the mall and through Pick n Pay, after which, the braai-off will take place and be judged by the community and the customers.”
