WCape delay in results helps learners

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said the delay of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results in the province is meant to help Grade 12 learners. Basic education minister Angie Motshekga is expected to announce the results at 6pm on Monday evening, however learners in the Western Cape will have to wait one more day for their individual results.

“We have gotten many questions regarding the reasons we announce the results on a different day than it is released in the Western Cape. We mainly do this to assist matriculants with the frustrations that come with results,” says spokesperson for Western Cape Ministry of Education, Jessica Shelver.

The department claims that although this policy has been in place since 2009, they constantly have enquiries regarding the delay.

The department insists that this delay is because they not only give principals at schools time to check for errors but to allow them to make the necessary arrangements for those candidates who do not meet the necessary passing requirements.

“In the Western Cape candidates are issued the results at 12h00 the next day so principals can examine results for any discrepancies and alert the Western Cape Education Department to any candidates that need counselling due to disappointment regarding results,” says Shelver.

The WCED has counselors available across the province should candidates need assistance.

She added that those matriculants who do not pass the NSC exam will be afforded the opportunity to rewrite the exams.
“Failure of a subject with National Senior Certificate exams does not mean you have to repeat the grade you will simply rewrite the exam,” says Shelver.

Those learners who need to rewrite their exam will have to apply for the supplementary exams.

“The closing dates for supplementary exams are 26 January 2015,” says Shelver.

At 12h00 on 6th January 2015, the 2014 NSC candidates will then receive their individual results.

The individual candidate results will then be available on the Western Cape Government website (http://www.westerncape.gov.za/service/examination-information-and-results) from 15h00 on Tuesday 6th January 2015. VOC
