The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is satisfied with the outcome of the marking process as well as the efforts of the professionals who assisted with the marking of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination scripts this weekend.

“We are satisfied with the process of this very concentrated and critical process of the examinations and we want to thank all markers, mark checkers and capturers for the very responsible and professional way that they went about this process,” says MEC for Education, Debbie Schafer

On Thursday all examination scripts were thoroughly checked. The department continues to mark and check quickly, strictly and accurately but with care.

“Rigorous mark checking and capturing of all marks were completed yesterday and final checks are currently under way,” says the minister.

The marking process includes the marked paper having a percentage of scripts and markers moderated (remarked) by senior markers appointed for this purpose. The marked scripts are then checked by ‘mark checkers’ and then uploaded onto a national database.

The results are released on 5th January 2015 by the National Minister of Education Angie Motshekga but are only received by Western Cape candidates on 6th January 2014.

“There is much anticipation over these results particularly by parents and matriculants. Markers and moderators have scored examination scripts as accurately as they can,” says Schafer

After schools collect the results from the district offices on 6th January 2014 educators are to analyse and check marks to see if there are any discrepancies.

Learners have to wait for their results until 12:00pm the day until it is released. Counselling will be offered to those who are disappointed by their results.

“This is done for a number of reasons which include the fact that principals check the results to identify any errors, and to alert the WCED regarding a candidate that may be disappointed by their results and need counselling,” says Schafer.

The WCED has counsellors across the province should candidates need assistance. Results will be made available to matriculants on 6th January 2014 at 12:00pm at their schools. VOC
