Two women appeared in a court on Thursday for allegedly stealing more than R2m while working as a clerk and a shop assistant, respectively, at a Milnerton, Cape Town, petrol filling station.

Clerk Wilhelmina Burger, 58, and shop assistant Sandra Nelson, 64, appeared in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court before magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg.

They were previously represented by a Legal Aid lawyer, but at Thursday’s proceedings prosecutor Tracy Belelie told the court that the privately-funded lawyer’s firm, Judicare, would take over the defence.

According to the charge sheet, the two women worked at Van Zyl Motors in Milnerton where both had access to the safe containing cash.

The State alleges they either manipulated the electronic spreadsheet system used for the daily bookkeeping reconciliations or manipulated the amounts on the bank deposit slips.

Both face charges of fraud involving R206 6244, with an alternative charge of theft by general deficiency, committed between 2007 and 2009. News24
