The Presidency has confirmed that National Police Commissioner General Riah Phiyega submitted her response to the findings of the Marikana Commission of Inquiry an hour before deadline.

Acting spokesperson to the President Bongani Majola on Saturday confirmed Phiyega’s comments and views to President Jacob Zuma on the findings released on June 25 were received shortly before 23:00 last night.

Zuma wrote to Phiyega on the outcome of the inquiry and gave her one month to respond to the outcomes.

“President Zuma will study the response to determine whether any intervention is warranted, and the nature of such intervention,” Majola said in a statement.

In a previous statement, the presidency said by 22:00 last night, no response had yet been received.

The commission, headed by retired judge Ian Farlam, investigated the deaths of 44 people killed during strike-related unrest at Lonmin’s platinum mine in Marikana, Rustenburg in August 2012.

It recommended in its report, released last month, that Phiyega face an inquiry into her fitness to hold office.

The Farlam commission found that police leaders had lied about the events leading up to the killing of 34 striking workers at Lonmin’s Marikana mine on August 16 2012.

“The leadership of the police, on the highest level, appears to have taken the decision not to give the true version of how it came about that the ‘tactical option’ was implemented on the afternoon of August 16, and to conceal the fact that the plan to be implemented was hastily put together without inputs or evaluation,” the report reads.
