With Gaza experiencing heavy storms, the Al Quds Foundation recently launched the Gaza Emergency Flood Relief project which will assist Palestinians living in the congested coastal strip. The inclement weather has resulted in power cuts and major floods which have left many homeless and destroyed roads and agricultural farms.

The project is aimed at providing aid to residents who have been left without basic resources including water, medical aid, food and shelter. Trade unions, NGOs and universities will be mobilising in the campaign in order to bring greater awareness to the needs on the ground.

According to Shaykh Ebrahim Gabriels, international role players are getting involved after a meeting was called by the international committee in Beirut. The meeting was aimed at renewing the efforts of the broader international community to resolve issues in Gaza.

Gabriels took an interest in the cause after visiting Gaza in 2008 and witnessed the hardships Palestinians experienced.

“Due to on-going warfare caused by apartheid Israel, Palestinians have been reduced to poverty,” said Gabriels.

Another factor aggravating conditions in Gaza is the seven-year blockade, which has had a devastating impact on Gaza’s economy, infrastructure, and the free flow of people and goods, particularly exports. Israel agreed to allow more imports to Gaza of goods needed for reconstruction, but severe restrictions on exports and travel remain.
