Police Minister Bheki Cele and a high level police delegation are expected to meet with various community leaders on Wednesday in Bonteheuwel following widespread protests in various parts of the Cape Flats yesterday. The protest movement termed “Total Shutdown” blocked roads in various areas. Residents embarked on a mass protest to highlight the unemployment rate, sporadic increase in crime and poverty. Police fired stun grenades and dispersed a water canon in an attempt to restore peace amongst angry crowds across the city who disrupted traffic. However, community members have criticized the police’s use of force, with some saying it was unnecessary. Police are still monitoring the situation in various places. No further incidents have been reported overnight and this morning.
