A high speed car chase ended in a crash on Muizenberg beach and the arrest of three men – all thanks to a cellphone tracker.

The suspects appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of robbery and possession of stolen goods after a Muizenberg man was robbed outside a friend’s home in Marina Da Gama on Sunday afternoon.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said in a statement that the man had just got into his car when a white VW Polo pulled up behind him. A man got out and demanded his cellphones. The suspect then sped off towards Prince George Drive with the victim’s two iPhones.

The incident was reported to police and the victim fed the location of his devices to the officers by using a cellphone tracker, which pointed officers to Orange Road, Vrygrond.

“On seeing the police, the driver in the VW Polo sped off and a high speed chase ensued down Prince George Drive and into Baden Powell. The chase ended when the driver of the Polo lost control of the vehicle, whereafter it overturned and rolled onto the beach,” Van Wyk said.

The driver, a 26-year-old man from Khayelitsha, was found lying on the sand outside the car.

He was arrested for robbery and taken to Victoria Hospital for treatment.

Police then traced the phones and two men, aged 21 and 26, were arrested for being in possession of stolen property. News24
