The number of Palestinian women being held in Israel’s prisons has increased to 40 after thee minors were detained near Bethlehem earlier this week, the head of the Palestinian Authority Committee for Prisoners’ Affairs said Saturday. Issa Qaraqe said that Israel’s women’s prison, HaSharon, was now overcrowded, and Israeli authorities had decided to move three female prisoners to Ashkelon jail.
He said that Israel was holding nine Palestinian girls younger than 18, who he identified as Marah Bakir, Istabraq Noor, Hiba Jubran, Hadil Kalbiya, Nour Salameh, Dina Sbeih, Lynne al-Hih, Shurouq Dwayyat, and Jihan Ereiqat. He said that six female prisoners also remained wounded after they were shot by Israeli forces at the time of their arrest. These were Shurouq Dwayyat, Hilweh Hamamreh, Israa Jaabis, Marah Bakir, Istabraq Nour, and Amal Taqatqa.
Qaraqe added that Israel had placed Jurin Qadah from Ramallah and Asmaa Hamdan from Nazareth under administrative detention for a period of three months each.
The Palestinian MP Khalida Jarrar also remains in Israeli custody, where she is undergoing a trial that has been drawn out over nearly eight months. Israeli authorities initially sentenced her to administrative detention, but international pressure later forced them to bring 12 charges against her, focused on her political activism.
Earlier this month, prisoners’ rights group Addameer condemned “the deliberate delays by the Israeli occupation’s military prosecution and the military court” in her trial.
“Stalling the court proceedings are flagrant violations of fair trial guarantees and an attempt to prolong the arbitrary detention of Mrs. Jarrar in violation of all international human rights and humanitarian norms and standards,” the group said.
