An alleged serial rapist, believed to be behind the attacks on two UCT students and a hiker, will remain behind bars as the Director of Public Prosecutions decides in which court his trial will be heard.

Patrick Hlomane, 35, appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of rape, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstance and kidnapping.

The case was postponed to July 21.

Hlomane was arrested on March 12, days after UCT offered a R100 000 reward for information about the suspect believed to be behind the attacks on several students.

Hlomane faces a charge of rape in connection with an incident that occurred on November 19, 2015, where a 23-year-old woman was accosted and raped at the bottom of the local landmark and robbed of her personal belongings.

The latest attack occurred in March, when a woman was running along the Princess Ann cycling path. She was threatened with a knife and forced into the bushes, where she was raped.

Her attacker kept her there for hours and then made her walk with him to a garage. She managed to escape and was admitted to hospital.

According to the State, Hlomane had been behind bars before and did not have a fixed address.
