The body of an abandoned baby boy was found behind a post office in Retreat, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

A man walked into the Steenberg police station on Monday morning to report that a child had been abandoned in 7th Avenue, according to police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk.

“The police went to the scene and on arrival found the body of a baby boy covered with a blanket.”

Its age was unknown but the umbilical cord was still attached.

Police opened an inquest.
