The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre is conducting assessments across the metropole, as the latest cold front continues to bring heavy rain.

The storm made landfall at the weekend and has also brought along strong winds and rough seas. Structures have been affected in areas including Gugulethu, Wynberg, Valhalla Park, Khayelitsha, Hout Bay, Masiphumulele and Overcome Heights.

The City says majority of the flooding reports are situated on land “not suitable for habitation” and is primarily occupied illegally, including wetlands, waterlogged areas and structures built on private land. The transport department is providing milling and tending to various flooded roads.

According to the City, SASSA has insisted that affected persons be housed in community facilities which the City says it cannot accommodate “due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the health and safety precautions that apply to prevent the spread of disease”.

Downpours are expected to continue for the next few days. Emergencies can be reported to 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.
