Easter Ijtima underway

Tens of thousands of Muslims have descended upon the small community of Roshnee just south of Johannesburg this Easter weekend, for the Tabligh Jamaah’s annual Ijtimah. The event is one of the largest religious gatherings in the country, and seeks to draw as many Muslims together in a specific location for a specific duration, to focus on issues currently affecting the Muslim community. The event in its busiest period can draw up to 50 000 people at one time.

The Ijtimah’s core focus is to bring Muslims together for the purpose of promoting the important of the religion, and advising those in attendance to adhere to the principals and practices of Islam. Scholars from across the country, as well as a strong international contingent, will deliver talks throughout the duration of the weekend. Many attendees are expected to stay overnight at the venue.

Reporting from Roshnee, Radio Islam journalist Faizel Patel said organisers were expecting an immense crowd, particularly during the Jumuah prayers. He noted that a steady stream of cars – 80 every 15 minutes – was flowing into the venue. He estimated an overall attendance of about 40 000 during the Jumuah.

“The overall mood is that of excitement. A lot of people are really looking forward to this,” he said.

A number of prominent scholars are expected to speak at the Ijtimah on Friday, including Moulana Ahmed Suleman Khatani who will be rendered the pre-Jumuah Khutbah. Other draw cards include Dr Siddique Saheb of the Scotland jamaah and Qari Abdul Rashid Surti Saheb.

“There are quite a number of draw cards, although we haven’t got an exact lineup of what’s coming up. As the day goes on they will be rendering bayaans and discussing pertinent issues that are affecting the Muslim ummah today,” he explained.

Traffic into the venue is expected to be particularly congested throughout the weekend, owing to the fact that the area only has one significant entrance. Further complicating matters is that a cycle race is expected to be held on Friday in the nearby area of Meyerton. If congestion became too overwhelming, steps would be taken by officials to ease the traffic.

“That means the oncoming traffic lane will now be converted into a dual lane, which will ease the congestion. But this hasn’t been confirmed as yet,” he stated, urging people to arrive as early as possible.

The annual Tabligh Jamaat Ijtima is scheduled to take place in Roshnee from the 3-6 April 2015. VOC (Mubeen Banderker)
