The South African embassy in Jordan has confirmed that a South African was shot and killed on Monday, the Department of International Relations (Dirco) said.

The South African killed was a 37-year-old from Gauteng who worked for an American security company, Dirco spokesperson Nelson Kgwete wrote on Twitter.

“The next-of-kin of the deceased SA national has been informed.”

It could not be confirmed whether the South African killed was a man or a woman.

Government sent its condolences to the family and friends of the person who was killed, said Kgwete.

According to Associated Press, a Jordanian policeman opened fire on foreign trainers at a police compound, killing two Americans and a South African, before being shot dead.

Two Americans and four Jordanians were wounded in the shooting on the outskirts of the Jordanian capital Amman, government spokesperson Mohammed Momani told the state news agency Petra. News24
