Family critical after drive-by shooting

A shooting incident in Bonteheuwel on Wednesday night has left a family of five shaken and in hospital. Last night, Imam Magadien Abrahams and his family were shot at erratically after they stopped to give way to a passing vehicle.

“We were coming back from Mitchells Plain and my son was driving. It must have been around 10pm when we passing Bonteheuwel. My son was pulling away so a black Polo could come through. He pulled away and the car came through by the driver side. My son tells me ‘Daddy they are going to shoot’ and just then they started shooting at us,” Abrahams told VOC News.

All of the family members were left injured and rushed to hospital to Groote Schuur hospital for treatment.
“There were about four men in the car. Only one had a gun and was shooting at us at a very close range. My wife is currently in a very critical condition as she was shot many times. My sons are also critical but in a stable condition,” he said.

Abrahams’ shoulder was grazed in the incident and he is doing fine. Two sons were shot in the hand and mouth, while the youngest victim, a 13 year old, was shot in the stomach. He has been left traumatised after the shootout.

“My baby, my 13 year old son is very shocked because he was also shot at. He is in a stable condition but he is very shaken up.”

According to Abrahams, he feels this is a case of mistaken identity but at the same time reiterates that his vehicle is known in the community.

“I do not feel that this attack was targeting me or my family but my vehicle is known to the community so I am not sure why this happened,” he said.

Western Cape police spokesperson FC Van Wyk said they are investigating the incident.

The family members received medical treatment at nearby hospitals for various wounds to their bodies,” he explained.

“It is reported that the occupants of a black VW polo randomly shot at the family. We have opened a case attempted murder however preliminary investigation in the area shows that the VW polo was later found abandoned in Bonteheuwel. We even found this vehicle was stolen in Delft last month.”
