New load shedding schedule for Cape

Eskom is set to revise a new load shedding schedule for the Western Cape. The primary reason for the change is due to the consumption patterns of consumers during winter.

“There is an increase of consumption during this period. The low temperatures affect the consumption,” says Eskom provincial head Alwie Lester.

Compared to earlier schedules which rotate every 5 days, this schedule runs for 31 days with a rotation every 18 days.

“These decisions are based on the complaints of people. Due to this adjustment you will seldom find yourself in the same load shedding slot at the same time,” says Lester.

Eskom has said it would go through all the necessary other power source options before choosing load shedding. Lester said the new schedule was “very fair”.

“It is equitable and fair whether on light commercial or residential. You won’t find those who get load shedding in the Maghrieb slot this week doing so again next week. There will be rotation so everyone will get an opportunity to be in that slot even if it is not the right slot for everyone,” says Lester.

The schedule is set for 1st July which will be available on Eskom’s website, at vending stations and Eskom walk in stations.

Eskom has warned that if electricity prices are not hiked, load-shedding will continue. The power utility is sticking to its demand for a 25.3% electricity price increase which if not met, will lead to stage 3 load shedding. VOC
