– Shootings between rival gangs flared up for a second time in Manenberg, Cape Town, on Saturday afternoon.

A 40-year-old resident, who did not want to be named because she feared for her safety, told News24 that the sound of bullets could be heard around 16:00, but that the police were nowhere close to where the shooting was happening.

“It has subsided now so the people who went to buy food are rushing to their homes,” she said.

Shooting also broke out on Friday night and Saturday morning, with police using stun grenades in the morning to defuse the situation.

The resident said the shooting started when a peace deal between the Americans and the Hard Livings gang faltered after a gambling game went foul.

Two gang members were injured and one, from the Hard Livings gang, was killed, she said.

The Western Cape police had yet to confirm Friday’s casualties.

Residents feared for what would happen when the sun set because they believed the gang might seek vengeance for the death of one of their members.

“Though the police are here, it doesn’t mean our people are safe,” the resident said.

She believed part of the solution lay in demolishing the flats in two hotspots.

“The [council] flats must be eradicated because it festers gangsterism and drug dealings.”

Meanwhile, the police confirmed a 22-year-old man was shot and wounded in Eastridge, Mitchell’s Plain, on Saturday afternoon.

The circumstances for the shooting were being investigated and the man was admitted to hospital, said police spokesperson André Traut.

No arrests had yet been made. News24
