Islamic history aficionados will be put to the test in the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia’s annual competition, in which one person could win the ultimate prize – the gift of haj. Under the auspices of the Religious Attaché of the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, the “Family of the Messenger (saw) & Companions” competition has once again been opened to the public for its seventh consecutive year.

The competition calls on young Islamic academics over the age of 20 to be quizzed on their knowledge on the life and companions of the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh).

According to Mohammed Wadee from the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Pretoria, the competition aims to educate people of the respect for the Prophet and the family members, commonly known as the ‘Ahlal Bayt’.

“The competition is of an academic nature. There are twenty multiple choice questions on the forms. These questions do require research to understand what the scholars over the years have said about our Prophet,” Wadee explains.

Winners will receive an all paid haj ticket and will be the guests of the Saudi King. The runner-ups stand a chance to win either a laptop, cellphone or digital Quran.

The application forms/questionnaires will be available at the VOC studios in Salt River and can also be downloaded here:

Meanwhile, clues and answers to the various questions can be found at www.deenclass.com. Wadee said of the questions are quite challenging and the answers can often only be found in Arabic.

The 2 June 2015 is the last day for entries at all drop-off points around the country. Participants can drop off forms at the VOC studios.

The selection of winners will be decided in Saudi Arabia.

Applications can also be submitted via the post. Forms will only be accepted if received by no later than 09h00 on the 03 June 2015 in the below mentioned post box:

  1. I hope that this will not be a propaganda exercise. The companions of the holy Prophet did wonderful things and some not-so-glorious things. They were human beings. Look at what happened to the leadership of the anti-Apartheid struggle during and after the struggle. There were huge disagreements, infiltrations by the regime and betrayals after liberation.

When we read the history of the battle of Uhud then we should try to recall who were the companions who abandoned their posts and who were those who ran away? Why do we not know their names?

When we read the ayat on those who are martyred being alive (3:169; 2:154) then we see it as a response to the the propaganda war being waged by munafiqoon, who were indeed companions of the Prophet. In 3:167 these companions were “yawma idhin aqrabu minhum lil-eemaan” they were closer to kufr than imaan.

Who were the companions with whom the holy Prophet is advised to be compassionate in 3:159? Who did he have to forgive? Why did he have to put his utter disappointment in them aside and make shura with them. He could not and would not trust them so he had to rely on Allah 3:159. Why do we not read the Quran but listen to propaganda?

We do not read the Quran or the Seerah for our information on the companions but the propaganda of our sects and mathahib. That is why we have people blindly defending the Sahaba. Look at our former Secretary General of the Mineworkers Union who played a sterling role in the struggle. Take a look at his Marikana email. Then try to trace the journey from the mineworkers union to Marikana. Why can we do this in his case and not do so when the Quran provides us with the same types of details about the companions of the holy Prophet.

We have learned people who talk about the companions in opposition to what is in the Quran and we have people who kill other Muslims who read the Quran?

This is not difficult but th organisers of the competition do not have any interests in truth.

    1. You talk about propaganda, your piece of ideas is the real propanga if you but know. Review, read, reread and contemplate on the Noble Qur’an and the Authentic Hadiths and you will come to know, if in shaa Allah you are of those given understand. Not equal are we with the Companions of our Prophet(S.A.W.) that is why Allah the Mighty the Wise chose them and not us to be with His Messenger. We are all humans, we make mistakes and repent or return and that makes us human. You can not use our defeat at Uhud and other to defame or degrade the Companions and do you no what if you happen to be in their time you willed have
been the worst enemy to the Prophet (The Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon him) and the Conmpanions( may Allah be pleased with them all). Please wake up. Truth has come and falsehood shall perish.
