The eight SABC journalists who took the broadcaster to court this year will testify before Parliament’s ad hoc committee looking into the fitness of the SABC board on Monday.

Committee chairperson Vincent Smith said on Friday that the group will be represented by four of the eight members.

They will appear at 16:00.

Also on the list of witnesses on Monday were former SABC human resources chief Jabulani Mabaso, former technology head Sipho Masinga and former labour relations general manager Madiwe Nkosi.

November media reports said the eight journalists were being intimidated and threatened at their homes ahead of the inquiry.

They have since sought police protection through an appeal to Parliament.

The SABC was heavily criticised in July when it fired journalists Suna Venter, Foeta Krige, Krivani Pillay, Thandeka Gqubule, Busisiwe Ntuli, Lukhanyo Calata, Vuyo Mvoko and Jacques Steenkamp for speaking out against the broadcaster’s policy to not show footage of violent protests.

The eight journalists were rehired by the SABC in September following a lengthy Labour Court battle.

Subsequently, they filed papers at the Constitutional Court asking for the National Assembly to institute an inquiry into the various issues plaguing the broadcaster, including their dismissals.

Many have since left the broadcaster.
