A 16 year-old student has been killed in Southern India while trying to take a selfie with a speeding train in the background.

The boy was returning home after an excursion with friends when he was struck at a railway station outside Chennai.

Witnesses say he was on the edge of the platform, trying to take his selfie when he was hit by the train.

India has reported several selfie-related deaths in recent weeks.

Last month, police in Mumbai created no-selfie zones after a university girl fell into the sea and drowned while taking a photograph of herself on her phone.

Also in January, a young man taking a selfie fell to his death from the ramparts of a fort in. DW NEWS
