Students at Parliament to hand over memorandum

The crowd of students gathering in front of Parliament have started to grow as more protesters, some wearing white headbands, have joined in.

Earlier a group of about 100 students and workers gathered outside the gates of Parliament to hand over a memorandum calling for the police minister to be held accountable for the “brutality experienced last week”, free education and the scrapping of outsourcing at all tertiary institutions.

Most of the participants are from the University of Cape Town, and Cape University of Technology’s Cape Town and Bellville campuses.

The group sounded upbeat, singing and dancing. There were a number of older women in the group, harmonising to the protest aims about having no money. They wore white T-shirts with #Endoutsourcing and #feesmustfall on the front. On the back was: “The revolution will be black – led and intersectional or it will be bullshit”.

A few policemen hung back, while one asked around to establish whether a memorandum would be handed over.

On October 21, the cobbled area was filled with students demanding that there be no fee increase next year. Their wish was granted on Friday by President Jacob Zuma. But a push to stop outsourcing and for no fees at all is still in the boil.

According to posts on social media, more students from the various institutions were still on their way to Parliament by train.
