Thousands of Palestinians performed Eid al-Fitr prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem on Friday as the holy month of Ramadan came to a close.

Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib, the general director of the Jerusalem Endowment and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs said that more than 80,000 worshipers arrived at the mosque compound in the early morning.

He added that the majority of worshipers were Palestinian citizens of Israel as well as from Arab and Islamic countries.

The Imam of Al-Aqsa, Sheikh Youssef Abu Isneineh, greeted Muslim attendees for the Eid al-Fitr holiday and called for unity and reconciliation.

Worshipers were accompanied by a youth group that organized a sit-in in at the mosque compound, raising Palestinian flags.

A march set off from the compound in support of the former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi who was removed from power in 2013.

Friday’s events marked the end of increased visitors to the area.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third-holiest site in Islam and received thousands of Palestinian worshipers during Ramadan this year, the majority of whom required permits from Israel to access the holy site that lies in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem.

Ramadan often offers a rare opportunity for Palestinians to visit East Jerusalem as entry to the city remains strictly limited during rest of the year.

While Israel initially eased travel restrictions for Palestinians during the holy month, authorities said such increases in movement came on the condition that security wasn’t “breached.”

At the end of June, Israeli authorities set new restrictions on Palestinians entering Jerusalem from the occupied West Bank allegedly in response to attacks targeting Israeli military and settlers, revoking the entry permits of hundreds set to travel.

Tensions came to a head in early July when a senior Israeli commander shot dead Muhammad Hani al-Kasbah, 17, after he allegedly threw stones an Israeli military vehicle close to the Qalandiya checkpoint.

Israeli military checkpoints in the occupied West Bank witnessed frequent violence during Ramadan, with a total of two Palestinians killed by Israeli forces at the military crossings.

Two Israeli settlers were also killed during the same time period.

Over 50 Palestinians were injured by Israeli forces during the holy month, while around 10 Israelis were also injured. MAANNEWS
