A service delivery protest closed a portion of the N2 outside Knynsa on Friday afternoon with burning portable toilets and tyres blocking the road.
“About 10 to 15 people were carrying these toilets into the road to burn them on top of the tyres. There were about four to five of these toilets,” motorist Hanrick van den Berg told News24.
He said hundreds of people, apparently between 14 and 20 years old, were on the scene.
Southern Cape spokesperson Malcolm Pojie said the portion of affected road was near the Nekkies informal settlement.
The protest began around 14:00 and appeared to be related to municipal service delivery issues, he said.
Public order police from George were assisting Knysna police with clearing the area and monitoring the unrest. News24
