Violence has once again flared up in Manenberg on the Cape Flats, with some reports stating that gangs are using machine guns to fight each other.

While residents do not wish to speak to the media, they have taken to social media to express their fear and anger as the war of bullets rages on.

The Manenberg Gang Watch Facebook page has been ablaze with news about the horrendous sound of gun shots, which some have labelled as the sound of “bombs going off” since early on Saturday morning.

Bullets continue to rain down on the notorious gang hot spots and the issue does not seem to get any attention from authorities.

Chairperson of the Manenberg Community Forum, Roekshanda Pascoe said that while police has diffused the situation, the fact that a member of one of the leading gangs has been killed is sparking violence.

Pascoe said three members of the gangs involved has been shot and that one women was shot while she was standing in her kitchen.

She said the gangs are not open to any agreement and this worries the NGO as many people fear for their lives on a daily basis.

“We want government to find a way to assist us to bring peace to Manenberg…we cannot live like this,” said Pascoe.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant colonel Andre Traut said at 10:30am, police took action when two groups of people shot at each other and also threw stones on the corner of Thames Ave and Thames Walk Manenberg.

He said stun grenades were used to defuse the situation, adding that police would continue to monitor the area.
There were no one injuires or arrests.

“SAPS members will remain in the area to maintain law and order. We will not allow gangsters to practise their activities in our communities and put the lives of the public in danger,” he concluded. VOC (Imogen Vollenhoven)
