Western Cape Transport and Public Works MEC, Daylin Mitchell said so far, 78% of Western Cape motorists have renewed their driving licences.

There are two weeks left before the driving licence renewal extension expires at the end of this month. The National Transport Department has indicated that there will be no further extensions of the deadline.

Mitchell said drivers can use the 61 driving licence testing centres in the province in order to avoid last-minute rushes and long queues.

Meanwhile, Mitchell said the vandalism and intimidation on the part of the taxi industry in the Nyanga area will not be tolerated.

Golden Arrow buses, a municipal truck and an Eskom vehicle were petrol bombed during protest action on Friday morning. Reports indicate that informal car taxi drivers were protesting against the traffic department impounding their cars.

Eskom and Golden Arrow have since suspended services in the area.
