Party leaders must remove Zuma – Maimane

Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane called on leaders of different parties on Friday to vote to remove President Jacob Zuma from office.

“President Zuma has consistently failed to protect the Constitution… he is not fit to be president, acting in a criminal way and still remains as the head of state. He has a track record of not acting in a certain manner,” Maimane told reporters in Johannesburg.

He said Zuma had failed to defend and protect the supremacy of the law for all South Africans.

He added that Zuma was bound to protect the Public Protector, however “he has created a serious misconduct”.

On Thursday morning, the Constitutional Court found that Zuma had acted inconsistently with the Constitution when he failed to comply with the Public Protector’s remedial action on the upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng said in the unanimous judgment: “The president failed to uphold, defend and respect the Constitution.”

“The failure by the president to comply with remedial action taken against him by the Public Protector… is inconsistent with the Constitution… and is invalid,” Mogoeng said.

Madonsela had found that, while the upgrades at Zuma’s home were meant to be exclusively for security upgrades, millions more were spent on features such as an amphitheatre, a visitor’s centre, a cattle kraal, chicken kraal and swimming pool.
