National police commissioner General Riah Phiyega has apparently already put out feelers about retiring “honourably” from her position.

According to a source, she believes she will be used elsewhere in government, Netwerk24 reported.

This while President Jacob Zuma must decide whether a judicial commission will be appointed to investigate Phiyega’s suitability for her position – as Marikana inquiry head retired judge Ian Farlam recommended.

Phiyega was apparently taking Farlam’s Marikana report extremely hard and feeling “hurt” and “down” about its findings and recommendations, wrote City Press.

Phiyega is said to feel particularly aggrieved because she had only been at the head of the SA Police Service for two months at the time of the massacre on August 16 2012.

On June 25, Phiyega received a letter from the president detailing the report’s recommendations and asking her to explain why she was fit to hold office.

Phiyega will respond to the findings by the end of July, News24 has reported. News24
